LinkedIn
is one of the most utilized social networking sites around when it comes to
business and the whole professional world. Doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs,
even the mailroom clerk that hopes to make it to the higher floors someday are
on the said network connecting with people that make a difference in their
careers, financial situation, or business. Now, while most people will probably
post their professional resume and background info complete with some kind of
professional photo on their LinkedIn profile, there are a handful that still
don’t understand what the network is for. They tend to treat LinkedIn as
another Facebook or Twitter, posting inappropriate content and uploading wacky
photos of themselves for their profile picture. Unfortunately, such a haphazard
perception of LinkedIn may eventually cost them a job, an investor, or possibly
a profitable joint venture in the future. Here is a clearer picture as to why
that LinkedIn profile picture of yours really matters.
The Whole Office Will Check
You Out
It
always happens on your first two days on a new job. People, intrigued by your
sudden appearance (and in some cases, threatened), will often resort to online
research to figure out what kind of person and co-worker you are. If you are on
LinkedIn (and you probably are), they will see your profile. Do you really want
to make a first impression with that photo of you slobbering down a hot fudge
sundae? No you don’t. The first thing these people will see will be your photo.
If you want to make a lasting impression on your co-workers and your boss, make
sure the photo there exudes confidence mixed with a little friendliness. Don’t
post a too formal photo or an overly casual photo. Something that shouts
professional without the need for a coat and tie will do nicely.
Recruiters Take a Look at
Photos Too
LinkedIn
is a social network that is literally infested with recruiters from a variety
of industries and fields. They scour the four corners of LinkedIn for a living
trying to find talent they can pirate for their clients. Yes, online
headhunters or actual employers. It really doesn’t matter for as long as your
photo speaks volumes as to what a great pick you will be for their
organization. A formal photo might work nicely. However, a great smile combined
with a fashionable cocktail suit will be a much better sight.
Building More Connections
with a Photo
Just
like an eye-catching profile pictures can get Twitter followers, a
toned down look is what you definitely want in your profile photo if the reason
why you are on LinkedIn is because you want to network, to meet new people in
the field you are in, or even to hook up with a possible partner for business.
A tastefully done casual picture will work most of the time. However, if you
think you need to exude a little more class, then you may wear a coat on top of
a shirt with an unbuttoned collar. Oh, and don’t forget to smile.
In all your photos, a neutral backdrop and setting is key. Sitting
by a bench in a park, in a café with a cup of coffee, or maybe a candid shot of
you and your family having a blast at a wedding are great ideas to ponder on.
